Essential Rules for Dachigam
Dachigam is a strictly protected bio-reserve. Read these rules before planning your trip.
You cannot just walk into Dachigam. Entry requires an official permit from the Jammu & Kashmir Wildlife Department. It is highly recommended to secure this permission online or from their Srinagar office a day prior to your visit to avoid being turned away at the gate.
Private vehicles, including our outstation taxis, are strictly prohibited from driving inside the National Park to protect the wildlife from noise and emissions. You must park at the entrance and explore the lower sections on foot or use the department's electric eco-vehicles (if operational).
Dachigam is famous for the critically endangered Hangul (Kashmir Stag) and Himalayan Black Bears. To maximize your chances of a sighting, schedule your taxi for an early morning pickup (e.g., 6:30 AM), as animals are most active at dawn.

1. What is the taxi return fare to Dachigam?

2. How long does the drive to Dachigam take?
The distance is only about 22 kilometers from the city center. The drive takes around 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on traffic along the Dal Lake Boulevard road.
3. Can the driver help me get the permit?
While our drivers are very helpful and know the area perfectly, the wildlife permit is issued directly to tourists based on their ID proofs. You must apply for it yourself either online via the J&K Wildlife portal or in person.
4. Is the trip suitable for elderly travelers?
The drive to the gate is perfectly comfortable. However, because private cars cannot go inside the park, exploring Dachigam requires a fair amount of walking, which may not be suitable for elderly travelers unless eco-buses are available on that day.
5. What else is nearby?
The historic Harwan Garden and the local Trout Fish Farm are located right outside the Dachigam gate. You can ask your driver to stop there on the way back for a relaxing afternoon.
