Important Taxi & Union Rules

Please read these rules carefully to avoid surprises during your Sonamarg trip.

šŸ›‘ Local Taxi Union Rule

By law, outstation taxis from Srinagar can only drop you at the main Sonamarg stand or your hotel. They are strictly forbidden from taking tourists for local sightseeing to places like Thajiwas Glacier or Zero Point (Zoji La). You must hire a local Sonamarg union cab or a pony for these specific spots.

āš ļø Zero Point Closures

Zero Point is located on the Zoji La pass. Access to this point is highly weather-dependent and regulated by the military/traffic police. During winter or heavy rain, the road to Zero Point will be closed to all civilian traffic.

🧄 Weather & Clothing

Sonamarg is significantly colder than Srinagar due to its proximity to glaciers. Even in mid-summer (July), the mornings and evenings are chilly. Always carry a heavy jacket and wear comfortable walking shoes.

2. How long does it take to reach Sonamarg?

The distance is about 80 kilometers. It usually takes between 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic in Ganderbal and the number of stops you make for photography along the Sindh River.

3. Can my Srinagar taxi take me to Thajiwas Glacier?

No. Due to strict local taxi union regulations, Srinagar-registered cabs are not allowed to do local sightseeing in Sonamarg. You will need to hire a local union cab or a pony ride from the Sonamarg taxi stand to reach the glacier.

4. Is the Srinagar to Sonamarg road safe?

Yes, the road from Srinagar to Sonamarg is a fully paved, wide two-lane highway maintained by the government. It is very safe and incredibly scenic. The challenging terrain only begins after Sonamarg as you ascend towards Zoji La.

5. What is the best time to start the day trip?

We recommend leaving Srinagar between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM. This gets you to Sonamarg by late morning, giving you 4-5 hours of sunlight to explore the glacier or local valleys before heading back.

6. Does it snow in Sonamarg?

Yes, Sonamarg receives heavy snowfall during the winter (December to March). During these months, the road may be blocked, and taxis can only go up to Gagangir village before the snow becomes impassable.
